GHRC expresses concern about the recent violent eviction of hundreds of families from the communities of Monte Olivo. According to recent reports, over 1,000 agents from joint police and military forces assaulted the communities, destroying homes and leaving several people injured. Five people were also arrested and detained yesterday, and 30 more arrest warrants have been put out.

The residents of Monte Olivo have been part of an ongoing struggle against the construction of the hydroelectric dam “Santa Rita.” In April of 2013, two Mayan children were murdered in the same area; community members believe that the assassinations were carried out by hitmen hired by Hidro Santa Rita during an attempt to assassinate a leader of a resistance movement against the dam.
